Pakistan's foreign ministry evaluating participation in cricket World Cup in India

Pakistan foreign ministry evaluating participation in cricket World Cup in India | Cricket News - Times of India

The foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan announced on Thursday that it was assessing all aspects of the senior national men's team's participation in the ODI (One Day International) World Cup 2023 in the Republic of India, including player safety.

This is the first signal from the Pakistan administration that the problem of sending the Pakistan cricket team to India for the quadrennial world tournament has been addressed.

India is set to host the ODI World Cup between October and November. The International Cricket Council (ICC), the global governing body of cricket, has yet to announce World Cup fixtures because it is awaiting clarification on Pakistan's plans to travel to India. In the past, the world body has revealed World Cup fixtures a year in advance, but there has been a delay this year.

Notably, Najam Sethi, who formerly served as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee, stated that the country's cricket body was not in a position to make a unilateral choice on its participation in the World Cup in India and that it would follow the government's decision. Najam Sethi even admitted that he had talked with government officials about the matter.

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the Spokesperson and Additional Foreign Secretary (Strategic Communications Division and Public Diplomacy) of Pakistan, said that Pakistan was of the view that "politics should not be mixed with sports.”

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said, “India's policy of not playing cricket in Pakistan is disappointing. We are observing and evaluating all aspects relating to our participation in the World Cup, including the security situation for Pakistani cricketers.”

India has not visited Pakistan since 2008. In addition, India has declined to travel to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for the Asia Cup later this year, citing security issues. Pakistan last visited India in 2016 to compete in the T20 World Cup.
